RETELLINGS

For Cement Fondu’s sixth annual pairing of an esteemed international artist with a local rising voice, Turner Prize–nominated Sin Wai Kin was teamed with award-winning multidisciplinary artist Rainbow Chan for Retellings, a gallery exhibition and live performance co-presented with Phoenix Central Park.

In Retellings(Revisions), Chan presented new silk paintings, sculptural works, and a short film that extend her ongoing engagement with Weitou bridal laments - bittersweet songs passed down through matrilineal storytelling among the Weitou women of Hong Kong, with whom she shares ancestral ties. Historically rooted in sorrow, these laments are reimagined by Chan as acts of resilience and public protest. Through this body of work, she transforms ritual into a contemporary meditation on diaspora, longing, and the emotional complexity of moving between homes. Tender yet defiant, Chan’s re-interpretations speak to the ongoing negotiation of cultural inheritance, renewal, and agency.
